Makayla and Phillip’s elegant wedding day at Waldenwoods in Howell, Michigan was everything you hope for in a summer celebration: calm, joy-filled, and full of meaning. The mix of soft natural light, peaceful lake views, and emotional moments made this one of my favorite weddings to have my associate team photograph this season. A Relaxed Morning with Family and Friends
First, the day started quietly, with Makayla getting ready at the venue surrounded by her closest people. The space at Waldenwoods offered beautiful light and plenty of room to breathe, something I always appreciate in a getting-ready space. Her dress hung near the window, waiting, while music played in the background. From her mom helping with final touches to the genuine excitement in the room, there was an ease to the morning that set the tone for the rest of the day. Meanwhile, Phillip got ready with his groomsmen in a nearby cabin, and the energy there was light, fun, and full of anticipation!
A Lakeside Ceremony with Heart
The ceremony took place just steps from the water, with a soft breeze moving through the trees and the lake behind them glimmering in the afternoon light. Waldenwoods offers such a peaceful ceremony setting, and it felt quiet and sacred in the best way. As Makayla walked down the aisle, Phillip’s face said everything. Their vows were personal, emotional, and full of quiet meaning. As someone who specializes in Detroit and Ann Arbor wedding photography, this is exactly the kind of ceremony I love to capture: unfiltered emotion, full presence, and a setting that complements, rather than competes with, the moment.
Portraits That Felt Effortless
After the ceremony, we wandered the grounds of Waldenwoods for portraits and every location gave us something beautiful. From the greenery around the lake to the soft light near the trees, the setting felt timeless and calm. Makayla and Phillip settled into each other naturally, needing almost no direction. You can see it in their gallery how connected they are, how present. My favorite images from the day are the ones where they weren’t even aware of the camera. The reception space inside was so cozy and inviting, with string lights, long tables, and the kind of layout that brings people together. Toasts were full of laughter and meaningful stories, and when the dance floor opened up everyone was on it. The energy stayed high the whole night with guests dancing, singing, and celebrating with full hearts. That balance of emotional and fun is what makes weddings like this so memorable. It wasn’t just beautiful—it was alive.
