What to Know Before Planning a Wedding in Detroit

Weddings

What to know before planning a wedding in Detroit might sound like a long list—and sure, it can be—but the truth is, it’s more about knowing what actually matters. As someone who’s photographed weddings all over the city, I’ve seen how special it is when couples lean into Detroit’s vibe and do things their way. This isn’t a checklist or a rulebook. It’s just the kind of advice I’d give to a friend who just got engaged and asked, “Where do I even start?”

Why Detroit?

Honestly, Detroit is underrated. The mix of historic buildings, waterfront views, gritty charm, and a creative energy that keeps growing makes it such a cool place to get married. You’ve got spots that feel straight out of a magazine and others that just feel real and full of character. Whether you want an elegant city celebration or something intimate and offbeat, it’s all here.

A Few Venues Worth Checking Out

There are so many good ones, but here are a few I either love shooting at or always recommend to couples:

The Masonic Temple feels bold and dramatic with a ton of character
The Whiskey Factory has that warm, industrial vibe that photographs beautifully
Detroit Institute of Arts gives you those timeless, elegant vibes

And if you’re into plants and dreamy light, Planterra Conservatory just outside the city is absolutely stunning.

When to Get Married in Detroit

Detroit goes through serious seasonal shifts, so the time of year can totally change the feel of your day. Summer is full of sunshine and rooftop potential but comes with heat and a few Tigers game traffic jams. Fall is cozy and colorful and gives you that golden light photographers obsess over. Spring brings blossoms and fresh greens but can be a little unpredictable with rain. Winter weddings are super underrated if you don’t mind bundling up and want something moody and romantic.

Working With Local Vendors

Detroit has such a talented wedding community. Florists, planners, DJs, and photographers here are constantly leveling up. My best advice? Reach out early. People book fast, especially for fall weekends. And don’t be afraid to ask questions. We all want to help you feel confident in your decisions. A lot of us are more than vendors—we’re extra sets of eyes on the timeline, people wranglers, calm in the chaos.

If you’re still figuring out photography, I’d love to be part of your day. I know which rooftops have the best light, how long to really plan for portraits, and where to sneak away for a quiet moment downtown.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind

Some popular photo spots like Belle Isle might require a permit, so it’s good to check ahead. Also, leave a little buffer in your timeline—between construction, sports traffic, and downtown events, things don’t always run on schedule. That’s normal. Go with the flow. I promise we’ll still get the shots. Golden hour in Detroit hits different. If you can, carve out 10 to 15 minutes around sunset to step away for a few photos. It’s worth it.

If You’re Still in Planning Mode

If you’re overwhelmed, that’s okay. It’s a lot. But it doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful. Focus on what feels true to you. Surround yourself with people who get it. Let your day breathe a little. And find vendors who don’t just check boxes, but feel like a good fit.

If you’re looking for someone to capture the real moments and help guide you along the way, I’d love to hear what you’re dreaming up. And if you ever find yourself wondering what to know before planning a wedding in Detroit, I hope this gave you a good place to start.

Kind Words

“Mariah is such a pleasure to work with! She is not only the friendliest person who makes you feel so comfortable right when you meet her, but you can tell photography is truly her passion. It’s a breath of fresh air to be able to have photos taken without feeling rushed or feeling like you are “just another client” to get through. I have had the joy of doing 2 different sessions with Mariah so far and each time, the pictures turned out absolutely flawless.” – Shannon & Nico
