Getting engaged is such an exciting season of life, and engagement photos are one of the best ways to celebrate it. They give you the chance to document this special chapter before the wedding day arrives and they can be used for save-the-dates, wedding websites, invitations, guest books, and more.
But when should you actually take your engagement photos and should you use your wedding photographer for the session?
For most couples, I recommend scheduling engagement photos 6–12 months before the wedding. This gives you plenty of time to enjoy the photos and use them for wedding-related details without feeling rushed. That said, there isn’t one perfect timeline for every couple.
If you’re planning to include engagement photos on your save-the-dates, aim to have your session 8–12 months before the wedding, or even earlier if you’re planning a destination wedding. You’ll want enough time for your photographer to edit your gallery, choose your favorite images, and design and order your stationery.
One of the best things about engagement photos is that you don’t have to take them during the same season as your wedding. Having a summer wedding? You could take your engagement photos in the fall for colorful foliage. Planning a winter wedding? A spring or summer engagement session can give you a completely different look. Think about the scenery, colors, and overall feeling you want in your photos. Your engagement session is an opportunity to create images that feel like you.

The date isn’t the only thing that matters. The time of day can make a huge difference in your photos. For outdoor sessions, I often recommend the hours around golden hour, shortly before sunset. The softer, warmer light can create beautiful, romantic images and flattering skin tones. Morning sessions can also be gorgeous, especially if you love soft light, quiet locations, and having your session before the rest of the day gets busy. I help my couples choose the best time based on your location, season, and the type of images you’re hoping to create.
While you can absolutely hire a different photographer for your engagement session, there are some major advantages to working with the person who will photograph your wedding.
For many couples, professional photos aren’t an everyday experience. Having an engagement session with your wedding photographer gives you an opportunity to learn what it feels like to be photographed before the big day. You’ll get familiar with their direction, posing style, and personality. You’ll also learn what works for you as a couple—whether that’s lots of movement and candid moments or more classic, posed portraits. By the time your wedding day arrives, getting in front of the camera won’t feel nearly as unfamiliar.
This is one of my favorite parts of engagement sessions. Your photographer gets to see how you naturally interact with one another. Do you laugh constantly? Are you affectionate? Do you prefer candid moments? Are you a little nervous at first? Those details help your photographer understand how to photograph you in a way that feels authentic. Instead of showing up on your wedding day as strangers behind a camera, you’ll already have a relationship.
Think of your engagement session as a low-pressure practice run. You’ll get to experience things like:
And if something doesn’t feel natural, there’s plenty of time to adjust before your wedding day.
This might be the biggest benefit of all. You’ve already spent time together. You’ve already laughed together. You’ve already learned how your photographer works. So when your wedding day arrives, there’s one less unfamiliar thing to worry about. Instead of wondering, “What am I supposed to do?”, you can focus on enjoying the moment.

At the end of the day, engagement photos aren’t simply another item to check off your wedding planning list. They’re a chance to slow down and celebrate being engaged. They’re a chance to spend intentional time together. And they’re a chance to create beautiful photographs that capture who you are before you become husband and wife.
If you’re already investing in a photographer to document your wedding day, consider making your engagement session part of that experience. The more your photographer gets to know you before the wedding, the more natural and personal your wedding photography experience can feel. Your wedding day will go by quickly. Your engagement session gives you another opportunity to pause, have fun, and remember this season of your story.
